Chains and chain components in a chain sling must be compatible

A lifting chain often consists of several parts, such as the chain, hooks, and connecting links. To ensure a safe lift, these components must be compatible and suitable for the specific task. It is therefore important to consider the entire chain system - not just the individual parts.

Check the markings on the chain and chain components

Begin by checking the markings on the chain and its components. Depending on the product type and manufacturer, these markings may indicate details such as the manufacturer, size, grade, or Working Load Limit (WLL).

The markings must be legible so that the component can be identified and cross-referenced with the product documentation. If the markings are missing or illegible, the component should not be used until a competent person has assessed it.

Verify that the components are compatible

Hooks and other lifting components must be designed for use with the specific chain in question. It is not sufficient that they can be physically connected or that they appear to be of an appropriate size. Verify that the components are approved for the system and meet the chain’s specifications.

When selecting or replacing a chain component, ensure that:

  • The components are intended for the same type of lifting application
  • The size and load capacity are compatible
  • The manufacturer’s instructions for assembly and use are followed
  • The complete assembly has the required Working Load Limit for the task

Steel quality and grade may be factors in this assessment, but they should not be the sole criteria. Read more about the differences between grades in the article "What do steel grades mean".

Do not replace lifting components based solely on appearance

A component that resembles the existing one is not necessarily a suitable replacement. When replacing parts, check the product identification and documentation, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid mixing components if their compatibility cannot be confirmed.

If a part of a chain system needs to be replaced and discarded - for instance, due to wear or overloading - it may also be necessary to replace other parts. The user typically identifies this during the visual inspection they must perform before using the product. Always adhere to applicable requirements and the manufacturer's guidelines for the specific chain system in question.

Check components before use

Before using lifting equipment, the user must inspect the chain and hooks for visible damage and signs of wear. Look specifically for deformation, cracks, severe corrosion, damaged latches, or abnormal wear.

We offer training on user inspections.

Do not use components that are damaged, or for which reliable identification and suitability are uncertain. Have a competent person assess them before considering putting them back into service.

Consider the entire lifting solution

Safe operation involves more than simply selecting a chain and a hook that each bear the appropriate markings. The components must function together as a system, and the entire solution must be suitable for the specific lifting task.

If you are in doubt regarding compatibility, labeling, or replacement, you should check the product documentation or seek advice before using the equipment.
