That's why it's called HMPE

HMPE stands for High Modulus Polyethylene and is a collective term for a type of synthetic fiber with very high strength in relation to its weight. The material is used, among other things, to manufacture textile lifting products such as round slings, webbing (lifting) slings, ropes, and other solutions in which low weight, high breaking strength, and ease of handling are important properties.

What are the benefits of lifting products with HMPE

One of the major benefits of HMPE is that the fibers can provide lifting equipment with high capacity and low self-weight. This makes the material particularly relevant in situations where the equipment needs to be moved frequently, handled manually, or used in areas with limited space. Compared with many traditional solutions, HMPE-based equipment can be easier to work with, thereby contributing to a more ergonomic workday.

HMPE resistance

HMPE also has good resistance to moisture and many chemical influences. The material absorbs very little water, which can be an advantage in environments where the equipment is exposed to changing weather conditions or used outdoors. At the same time, the fibers have a smooth surface, which can help reduce friction in certain applications.

Although HMPE is a strong and technically advanced material, correct use is still essential. Lifting equipment must always be selected based on the specific task, load, working environment, and applicable safety requirements.

It is also important to be aware of factors such as sharp edges, temperature, wear, and chemicals, as these conditions can affect service life and safety.

When should you choose HMPE lifting products

Products made with HMPE are therefore an obvious choice when lightweight, strong, and flexible lifting equipment is required. Still, the solution should always be assessed in relation to the practical application. With proper selection, use, and maintenance, HMPE-based products can be an effective alternative to heavier lifting solutions.

HMPE and Dyneema® – what is the difference?

HMPE is the fiber type itself, and it stands for High Modulus Polyethylene. It is therefore a general term for ultra-strong, lightweight polyethylene fibers.

Dyneema®, on the other hand, is a registered trademark for a specific type of HMPE fiber. You can therefore say that Dyneema® is HMPE, but HMPE is not necessarily Dyneema®. Other manufacturers can produce HMPE fibers under other trade names or qualities.

In practice, this means that products made with Dyneema® are typically based on a specific, documented fiber technology, whereas the term HMPE covers a broader material category. When choosing lifting equipment, it is therefore important to consider not only the fiber name but also the product’s documentation, capacity, construction, and suitability for the specific task.
