Inspection and repair of chain slings

Chain slings are used when wear resistance and durability is required. A chain sling is flexible. It is easy to shorten, it has many components to choose from, it can withstand high temperatures and it is easy to store.

Chain slings should be inspected for any obvious signs of deterioration before each use. If, at any time there is reason to doubt the safe condition of the sling, it should be withdrawn from service and subjected to a thorough examination.

A thorough examination is a visual check, performed by a competent person and, when required, completed with other methods, e.g. measurement and/or tests with intent to identify any damage or deterioration that might affect the slings fitness for use.

Records of such examinations should be maintained.

Damaged slings should be withdrawn from service.

Inspection

An inspection should be carried out annually by a competent person. Additional inspections may be required in the interim, depending on the operating conditions.

Chain slings should be thoroughly cleaned to be free from oil, dirt and rust prior to examination. Any cleaning method which does not damage the parent metal is acceptable. Methods to avoid are those using acids, overheating, removal of metal or movement of metal which may cover cracks or surface defects.

The chain sling must be removed from service for maintenance and repair immediately if the following defects occur:

Illegible markings (identification and/or lifting capacity specifications) on the chain sling

Deformation of links on the hook or load sides

Stretched chain

Restricted movement of the chain links

Wear

Cuts, indentations, grooves, incipient cracks, excessive corrosion, bent or twisted links or other faults

Signs of widening hooks, i.e. noticeably wider jaw opening or other deformations in the hook end.
